How to remove rust from glass

Publié par Ben Spargo le

While rust does not naturally develop on glass, it can drip from rusting gutters or metal onto glass, leaving some ugly stains. These can ruin a perfectly good glass window. In this blog post, we will be showing you how to remove rust from glass to get it looking spick and span. We will also show you how to prevent rust from developing around your glass, and how to stop any stains appearing in the future.

Remove Any Dirt or Smears

Before you begin the process of removing the rust stains from your glass, you need to make sure it is as clean as possible. This is to prevent any dirt, smears or water from affecting the rust removal process. By cleaning the glass first, you are making sure that the rust removal chemicals will only be reacting with the rust stains, giving them a much better chance of completely removing the rust.

Give the glass a wash with a bowl of soapy water and a clean, lint-free cloth, cleaning off any visible dirt. Make sure to then dry the glass with a different clean cloth, as the remover will not work if the glass is wet.

Once you have cleaned your glass, you are ready to prepare to remove the rust stains. As the chemicals you will be using to remove the rust are quite strong, you will need to protect yourself with some rubber gloves and protective eyewear. Once you have the suitable protection, you are ready to advance.

Remove the Rust Stains from your Glass

The next step in removing rust stains from glass is to spray some of Jenolite’s Rust Stain Remover directly onto any visible stains you can see on the glass. Make sure to shake the bottle of stain remover well, and twist the nozzle to open the spray applicator. Apply an even coverage of the spray to the rust stains, ensuring all surfaces affected by the rust stains are in contact with the liquid.

Give the remover sufficient time to soak into the stains. This is important as it needs time to start the reaction with the rust. Once you have waited, wipe the surface clean with a dry cloth, and if the stain is still present, reapply and repeat the process as necessary. You can also use Jenolite’s Rust Converter on the surrounding areas of the glass affected by rust, if you are looking to paint those after removing any rust. This works well on any metal near the glass that could be dripping rust onto the glass, as it converts the rust, lets you remove it, and then gives you a clean surface to paint on after the rust has been removed.

Prevent Rust Stains from appearing on Glass

Now you have removed the rust stains from your glass, the focus needs to be on preventing any rust from developing on the surrounding areas of the glass. Here are our top two tips for preventing rust from developing on glass:

  1. Use Jenolite’s Rust Converter on any metal areas near your glass to prevent them from developing rust, which could spread to your glass windows.
  2. Paint the areas surrounding the glass. The coating in paint functions like a sealant, making the painted area resistant to rust. Check out our range of anti-rust paints.
